News has reached Latvia that architect Gunnar Birkerts has been nominated for the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal 2013 and stands as on of the final candidates for this prestigious award. It signifies the international recognition and high acclamation for his years of creative work, among them the National Library of Latvia building.

A group of 17 European partner institutions have joined forces in the "Europeana Newspapers" project to, over the next 3 years, provide more than 18 million newspaper pages to the online service Europeana. Europeana is a single access point to millions of digitised books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records sourced from throughout Europe.

The National Library of Latvia and 16 other European partner institutions have joined forces in the "European Newspapers" project and will, over the next 3 years, provide more than 10 million newspaper pages to the EUROPEANA service. In addition National Digital Library of Latvia will increase a number of digitized Latvian newspapers (www.periodika.lv) for almost a half million pages.
