The National Bibliography (NB) is a record of the nation's publishing output. It is a resource for scholarship and information retrieval, and aids libraries and book buyers in the selection, acquisition and cataloguing of publications produced in Latvia. It is also used to indicate a bibliography of publications about Latvia (whether written by its nationals or not) and those written in Latvian as well as those published in it.
The national bibliography records the publishing activity of Latvia and as such is a measure of publishing intellectual output. This has traditionally included printed publications and more recently has been extended to electronic publications following the extension of legal deposit in 2006.
Publishers in Latvia are obliged by law to send a copy of all new publications to the NLL. This material is catalogued by experienced staff using ISBD, MARC21 and indexed using national version of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and the Universal Decimal Classification system (UDC).
The NB also contains details of forthcoming books. Information on new titles appears after publisher has received ISBN for new book.
New records of books are available twice a month as PDF.
Bibliographic information about maps, music, sound records, visual, audio and video resources is recorded in the NLL online catalogue.
