In order to ensure effective work of libraries and to optimize the processing of information, standardization is important not only within the framework of one library, but also at the national level and in the framework of international cooperation. Standards reflect current consensus on rules, principles, guidelines, best practice or models for a particular activity or service.

Standardization bodies:
- Data and Knowledge Management Department of the National Library of Latvia ensures the development of data standards, guidelines for libraries, consulting and training;
- Information and Documentation Standardization Technical Committee provides adaption of international standards and related documents for museum work, archives and records management and librarianship;
- The Latvian national standardization body Latvian Standard (LVS).
