An exhibition Epizodes. No svētdienas līdz sestdienai 1918. gadā (Episodes. From Sunday to Saturday in 1918) has opened at the National Library of Latvia (NLL). It presents a new approach – by section – to telling a story at the library, because the exhibition is located, by theme, across eight levels: 1, M, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Entry is free.
Over its eight levels, Epizodes. No svētdienas līdz sestdienai 1918. gadā offers stories in miniature that divulge testimonies about life in 1918, held in the NLL collection. Getting into the ambiance of the year Latvia proclaimed independence, visitors will see through the eyes of a child, a politician, a musician, a romantic lover and a security-service archivist of the time.
1918 is a year full of chaos and disquiet. Events rapidly follow one upon another and absolutely everything changes – front lines, borders, political regimes, governments, prices. Despite the harsh conditions, life goes on. Farmers make sure that their city relatives, worn-out by food shortages, receive a tasty morsel. Schoolchildren maintain their joie de vivre. Love blossoms. An art exhibition opens in Rīga. At the beginning of August 1918, a train with three carriages waits at a platform in St. Petersburg station, decorated with the inscription Латышская опера – the Latvian Opera. Orchestra musicians and soloists, some 120 artists in all, are seated in the carriages.
The exhibition will be open until 15 September 2019 during library OPENING HOURS.
The Epizodes. No svētdienas līdz sestdienai 1918. gadā exhibition is part of Latvia's centenary celebrations.
