Library accessibility for people with special needs

Printer-friendly version

The entire National Library of Latvia (NLL) building – all the reading rooms, event spaces and services – is accessible to all visitors, also to people with special needs, including those with reduced mobility. Visually impaired and blind people may be accompanied by their guide dogs.

Visitors with disabilities can park their cars, free of charge, at the NLL service entrance (Valguma iela), on the left-hand side after the barrier. Before visiting the library, please contact NLL Welcome Desk (phone +371 67806135, +371 25627640), submit your vehicle's registration number, and advise the date and time you are planning to visit the library. When you reach the barrier, please call (phone +371 26655804).

For visitors with visual impairment and reduced mobility, a call button is available on the right of the NLL's main entrance door. Pressing the button contacts NLL Welcome Desk staff, who will help you get into the library and, if necessary, assist you in moving around the building.

  • All of the library's levels are accessible to people with reduced mobility, by lift. The NLL also has its own wheelchairs for use by visitors. To apply to use a wheelchair, please contact NLL Welcome Desk (Level 1, phone +371 67806135, +371 25627640).
  • The space between shelves and tables in all reading rooms, group and individual study rooms is wider than 80 cm, there are no raised thresholds between rooms.
  • Each level of the library has conveniences that are suitable for people with special needs.
  • Reading accessories for people with visual impairment are available at the Reference and Information Centre (Level M).
