The National Library of Latvia Research Papers (NLL RP) collection is a longstanding international and interdisciplinary research publication, which represents all aspects of library science. The 2009 volume is significant, because it is also the NLL 90th anniversary issue, reflecting the diversity of library research (theoretical and practical alike) as well as emphasizing the role of the NLL as a research centre of excellence in Latvia.

The editors of the 2009 volume of NLL Research Papers invite contributions from a wide range of library science topics. As the main emphasis will be on the NLL anniversary year, the following themes and topics are suggested.

1. The history of the NLL
   • Especially: The challenge of an anniversary year
2. The NLL as an essential component of cultural identity
3. he NLL as a research centre: past, present and future
4. Cooperation and interaction of the NLL with other memory institutions (libraries, museums, archives)
5. The NLL as a centre of innovation:
   1. Digital content as a challenge to new libraries
      • Support for a user oriented environment
      • Libraries as part of the many-routed and multilingual information environment
      • Libraries as the electronic repository of cultural heritage
   2. The interface of education and libraries
   3. Libraries and Web 2.0
   4. The NLL as a centre for the interaction of language and culture
   5. The NLL as a national centre of knowledge management: practical and theoretical challenges
   6. The character of universal knowledge in the 21st century

Papers from, and on, the national library experience from outside Latvia are invited and welcome on any of the topics 2 – 5.6.

Papers should be submitted with an abstract. Length of paper: 5000-6000 words (37,000-45,000 characters, with spaces).
Length of abstract: 150-200 words (up to 1500 characters, with spaces).

Papers in NLL Research Papers will be published in Latvian, English and German, with abstracts in Latvian (if the text is in English or German) and in English (if the text is in Latvian or German).

References and citations should be as numerical endnotes, according to the guidelines for references and bibliographic citations.

Papers will be refereed.
