National Library of Latvia receives a gift: The Complete Edition of The Letters of Van Gogh
In
order to mark the 20 years of restored independence of Latvia and in
support of the National Library of Latvia, the Embassy of the
Netherlands will donate one of the most important art publications of
the decade: - The Collected Letters of Vincent van Gogh.
Ambassador Jurriaan Kraak will hand over the six volumes of The Letters of Van Gogh to the Director of the National Library Mr. Andris Vilks on 21 May at 3 pm at the Recent Literature Reading Room Kr. Barona street 14.
The presentation will be followed by a short introduction to the publication and to its internet version.
The many letters the famous Dutch painter wrote to his brother and faithful supporter, the art dealer Theo Van Gogh, have been recognized as some of the most valuable documents of the art world, a biographical and art historical treasure. They reflect not only the work and character of Van Gogh, but also enlighten the whole creative process that led to masterpieces like ‘Starry Night’, ‘Sunflowers’, Irises’ and ‘The Potato Eaters’. The six volumes contain more than 4300 illustrations, mostly sketches of Van Gogh in their actual size. It is a complete collection of all the letters from museums, archives and private collections, including previously unknown letters and fragments.
This publication, launched in 2009, was edited by the well known experts Leo Jansen, Hans Luijten and Nienke Bakker and is a compilation of 15 years of joint research by the Van Gogh Museum of Amsterdam and the Huygens Institute of Literature and Science History. The Collected Letters have received the highest marks from leading art critics all over the world and are considered to be among the most important and beautiful art publications of our time.

Art historians, students and everyone interested in the works and the life of Vincent will be happy to hear that the annotated letters are available not only in the beautiful original publication (CD-ROM included), but also in a web edition. Part of this very rich material is available for free public use: 902 letters, written and received by Van Gogh are arranged in an easy-to-use system with a possibility to search by several parameters, to read annotations and to print fragments. The letters are in their original languages – Dutch and French, with new transcripts and comments in English. All the material is available at www.vangoghletters.org.
