The Department of Press Statistics is preparing national publishing statistics, inter alia – for the Central Statistical Bureau and UNESCO.

Latvian press statistics dates back to 1951. Prior to that the press statistics meant report on the magazine and newspaper output. Starting with 1951 the press statistics provides also information about books and brochures. The press statistics of the previous years - 1940, 1941, 1944-1950 – was prepared retrospectively.

Services (for a fee and free of charge in accordance with the Internal Regulations of the NLL)

• providing reference to libraries, organisations, private persons (over the phone, in a written form, electronically);
• providing information about fiction published in Latvia.

Data Bases
The data base of the Department of Press Statistics was started in 1995. It provides a numerical profile of Latvian book publishing output, its quality and quantity. A part of this information is used to create the annual collection of press statistics “Latvian Press”. The data base is accessible in the local network.
