ISBN number serves for universal identification of a publication in a book form and for producing bar codes.

The structural unit of the Institute of Bibliography – the ISBN Agency is:

• Part of the international system for standard book numbering
• Latvia’s authorised institution for ensuring international standard book numbering
• An institution collecting authoritative information for the database of the International ISBN Agency and for publications

Services (free of charge and for a fee) in accordance with the Internal Regulations of the NLL:

• Granting an ISBN number to publishers on the basis of a written application (the application should mention the title and the author of the book). When submitting the application over the Internet (http://www.lursoft.lv/?a=173&v=lv), the publisher fills in the application form.
• Advice on the ISBN system and its use (also about deriving the bar code from ISBN)
• Factual information about the book publishers in Latvia and elsewhere.
