The oldest reference edition of the National Library of Latvia - (first edition – 1955) “Calendar for Libraries” contains information on important events, commemoration days and anniversaries of outstanding personalities, to some selected items bibliographical lists have been added.  Its title has changed several times, and the recent one was acquired in 1999.

The bibliographical lists included in the publication record literature published in Latvian. These are predominantly most recent and most significant works – books published during the last decade and articles in the periodicals of the last 3-5 years (magazines and newspapers).  In some exceptional cases older literature is also included.

In drawing up these bibliographical lists the collections of the Latvian National Library, electronic union catalogue and the national bibliography analytics data base are used as sources. The bibliographical description of the edition is made in accordance with ISBD standards and “The Rules on Applying the Standard of Bibliographical Description (BA:ISBD)  in Analytics Description” (Riga, 2000).

Since 2004 “Calendar for Libraries”  is published as an electronic edition and is forwarded  to the main libraries of the regions and cities for further distribution, it is also accessible on the Internet to all interested persons.

Since 2006 in cooperation with company TILDE “Calendar- Poster” is also published, which offers an illustrative overview of the persons whose anniversaries are celebrated in the specific  six months of the year.  “Calendar – Poster” in a printed and electronic form is published twice per year (once in six months) and is distributed to libraries and other interested parties.

The publication is prepared and published in the electronic form by the National Library of Latvia, the Library Research and Information Department of the Library Development Institute.
