The Children’s Literature Centre
The main lines of activity of the Children’s Literature Centre (CLC):
- Reader service;
- Introducing new methods for promoting reading and developing library services;
- Creating, developing and administering the national special purpose program “Promoting reading and library services for children”;
- Organising and implementing international and national seminars, conferences and projects;
- Advisory work with children’s libraries; children’s departments of libraries, school or education boards;
- A program of continuous education for the employees of Latvia’s children’s libraries and teachers;
- A review of library work (supervision, analysis, forecasts);
- Classification tables for children’s and school libraries’;
- Guidelines to libraries for working with children;
- Information about children’s literature;
- Annual annotated bibliographical list “Children’s books published in …..”;
- References;
- Overviews of literature;
- Exhibitions;
- Publications on issues of children’s literature;
- CLC offers a rich collection of literature for children and adolescents published in Latvia (since 1993 – all editions), as well as children’s books in foreign languages. An extensive range of periodicals is available: children’s magazines and newspapers in Latvian and Russian, periodicals on the issues of children’s literature, reading and pedagogy in Latvian, English and German. The Centre offers information in various forms: printed works, audio and visual materials, electronic documents.
Every year, usually – during the first week of
April, a conference dedicated to children’s literature and library work with
children is held, as the 2nd of April is not only the birthday of
Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish master of fairy-tales, but also the
International Day of the Children’s Books.
