The Library Development Institute

The Library Development Institute (LDI) of the LNN, established in 2002, unites four structural units:

  • The Centre of Children’s Literature

  • The Library Advisory Centre

  • The Library Research and Information Department

  • The Project Management and InformationCentre.

The LDI main lines of activities:

  • promotion of literature for children and adolescents, advisory support and programs of continuous education for children’s and school libraries, information services, regional, national and international events for children and adolescents, as well as for the employees of children’s and school libraries

  • methodological and advisory support to Latvian libraries, Latvian library portal http://www.biblioteka.lv, library statistics, building the collection of library and information science literature, digitising the materials of the library sector, seminars, conferences, discussions

  • the research of library history, including the research commissioned by the Cabinet of Ministers of the RL on the losses incurred by Latvian libraries during the period of Soviet occupation, sociological and applied research, the terminology of the sector and intersectoral terminology, the discussion club of library science and the history of book sector ”Gutenberg’s Galaxy”, journal “World of Libraries”, “Calendar for Libraries” in electronic and poster form, copyright solutions in digital environment, national and international events

  • the offer of Latvian and international projects to the librarians, advice on drafting project applications, the coordination and monitoring of the projects implemented by structural units of the NLL, the management of NLL international projects TELplus, EDLnet,EDLocal

  • organising the work of the NLL Training Centre: development of study programs, general management of the training courses for librarians, discussions on specific topics.
